A landmark multibillion-dollar transportation funding plan in Virginia is now posing a problem for lawmakers: how to spend the money in Fairfax County, since traffic is so bad that a $1.2 billion infusion of that money will maybe cover half of what needs fixing, the Washington Post reports.
Neighborhood groups and others in Fairfax County are angling to make sure their traffic headaches get top priority — the area home to 1.2 million is people is also home to multiple traffic “disaster zones,” says Nicholas Firth, whose South County Federation has for years complained about increasing backups on roads in and around Lorton.
The transportation funding law, which went into effect in July, will steer about $6 billion toward highways, bridges and other projects that seek to lighten road congestion. About $1.9 billion will target Northern Virginia.
