Fairfax revamps zoning, prompting abortion debate

Wednesday - 7/10/2013, 2:10pm  ET

FAIRFAX, Va. - The Fairfax City Council has voted to revamp its zoning of medical facilities, drawing the ire of abortion rights supporters who say the new rules target abortion clinics.

The change, approved Tuesday on a 5-2 vote, requires medical care facilities in the city to go through a detailed approval process and get approval from the city council itself. The old rules gave clinics like an abortion clinic to right to operate without a special permit.

The Washington Post reports (http://wapo.st/13LPIaQ) the measure was sponsored by Councilman Steven Stombres, who is chief of staff for House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va.

The measure drew opposition from representatives of Planned Parenthood.

The city currently has one abortion clinic that is trying to relocate to meet new rules imposed statewide on abortion clinics.
