FALLS CHURCH, Va. - Falls Church has agreed to sell its water utility to a Fairfax County-controlled water authority for $40 million.

The Washington Post ( reports the sale is the result of a federally mediated agreement. For years, thousands of customers have complained their drinking water cost nearly 60 percent more than water their neighbors receive from the county.

The deal announced Tuesday will lower costs for about 140,000 customers. It calls for the city to shoulder $30 million in utility pension and debt obligations and the reduction of rates for all Falls Church customers. Fairfax Water will retain the utility's current employees.

The agreement was approved by the Falls Church City Council, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and Fairfax Water's board. Falls Church voters must approve it in a 2013 referendum.
