RESTON, Va. - Happy birthday, Ranger Rick!
The Reston-based National Wildlife Federation is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the cartoon raccoon this month with the launch of a new children's magazine.
The federation announced Thursday that "Ranger Rick Jr." debuts its premiere issue next month, targeted at beginning readers ages 4 to 7. The new magazine introduces a new character, Ricky Raccoon, designed to appeal to younger children.
The existing "Ranger Rick" magazine is targeted at kids age 7 to 12.
Naturally, the brand re-launch also includes a new iPad app, featuring Ricky Raccoon and his friend Lars the Lion.
