Fairfax County payment system fails on day of tax deadline

Update: People can now go and make payments on the county’s website. Due to the processing issues, the deadline for payment has been extended to Saturday, Oct. 6, at midnight.

WASHINGTON, 6:30 p.m. – On the deadline to pay car taxes and registration fees, Fairfax County’s online payment system is experiencing issues processing payments.

County spokeswoman Merni Fitzgerald said the county was experiencing "some intermittent problems with our payment system" but that some people have been able to make online payments.

The county added an additional third-party payment option to pay by credit card Friday afternoon, but those options required payment of an additional service fee.

Payments also made at Global Express locations or Shoppers Food & Pharmacy stores before midnight will be considered on time.

The county has no plans at this point to grant waivers for late payments, which come with a 10 percent penalty, plus interest.

Payments received more than 30 days past the due date are assessed a 25 percent penalty.
