Rabid fox prompts warnings to Fairfax residents

WASHINGTON – Police are warning residents in one Fairfax neighborhood about a rabid fox recently found in the area.

Someone in the area of Chain Bridge Road and Whitehead Street reported a sick fox lying in his driveway for many hours.

City of Fairfax Police took the sick animal to a veterinary hospital, where it was euthanized.

Testing determined the fox had the rabies virus. There were no reports of exposure to humans.

Police are reminding residents to prevent the spread of rabies by vaccinating all pets and keeping them under control at all times.

Adults and children are cautioned against approaching stray animals, particularly wildlife.

Signs that wildlife might have rabies includes snarling, growling, hissing, the animal biting itself or the animal approaching people.

Report an animal displaying this behavior to City of Fairfax Police at 703-385- 7924.
