Va. mosque vandalized amid overseas protests

Saturday - 9/15/2012, 9:58pm  ET

HARRISONBURG, Va. (AP) - A mosque in Virginia has been vandalized as angry protests in the Muslim world continue over a film produced in the United States denigrating the Prophet Muhammad.

On Friday, worshippers at the Islamic Center of the Shenandoah Valley in Harrisonburg arrived at their weekly prayer service to find graffiti on their building.

The Daily News-Record reports that police believe the mosque vandalism is connected to similar graffiti at a local Christian school around the same time period.

The Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations is calling for an FBI investigation.

On Saturday, The Washington Post reported that about 30 cars parked on streets surrounding the Dar al-Hijrah mosque in Falls Church had windows smashed.

Fairfax County Police said the vandalism appeared to be random. Other cars were damaged in an area that extended from Lake Barcroft to Route 50.
