WASHINGTON -- A local mother gets a terrifying surprise after leaving her son alone in the car.
The woman, who has not been identified, had gone into a home on Murillo Street in Franconia, Va. to pick up a second child on her way to a Halloween party, leaving the 2-year-old boy in the back seat with the engine running.
When the woman returned, she saw her black 2006 Honda Pilot driving down the street, Fairfax County police spokeswoman Lucy Caldwell says. It had been stolen by a car thief.
The car was found a few blocks away at the intersection of Backlick Road and Leesville Boulevard. The child was still in the back seat, unhurt.
"Apparently that person perhaps realized there was a child in the back seat, dropped off the car and fled," says Caldwell.
The suspect is described only as a white male wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt.
Police are asking for the public's help. Anyone who might have seen the car or the driver around 4 p.m. on Sunday is being asked to call Crime Solvers at 1-866-411-8477 or the Fairfax county police at 703-691-2131.
