W.Va., Va. streams focus of monitoring effort

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Two conservation groups are teaming up to help monitor streams in Virginia and West Virginia that are within the watersheds of national forests.

Trout Unlimited and Wild Virginia are offering a training course for volunteers to conduct the monitoring in the Marcellus shale regions primarily within the George Washington National Forest. Most of the forest lies within Virginia, but portions of it lie within West Virginia.

Volunteers will learn about the potential impact on fish and wildlife from the drilling in the shale formations for natural gas. Once the volunteers are trained, the conservation groups will chose locations for the monitoring.

A one-day training session will be conducted on Nov. 8 in Charlottesville.
