NC ferry system ready to launch fall schedule

MANNS HARBOR, N.C. (AP) — With the peak of the tourist season having passed, the Ferry Division of the N.C. Department of Transportation is reducing the number of runs on its Hatteras-Ocracoke route.

The division will make the change on Sept. 23, reducing the number of departures from both sides from 36 to 30.

The fall schedule runs through Nov. 10. The next day, the Hatteras Inlet route will adopt a winter schedule with 18 departures from both sides each day.

Ferry Division Director Ed Goodwin said the division is constantly evaluating traffic patterns and passenger loads to give taxpayers the best service for their money. Goodwin said the intermediate fall schedule allows easy access to Ocracoke and Hatteras islands, while also allowing the division to back off its peak season schedule a little earlier.
