RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Civil War battlefields in Virginia and West Virginia are receiving federal funding to preserve land threatened with damage or destruction by urban and suburban development.
The National Park Service says Ream’s Station and White Oak Road in Virginia, as well as Harpers Ferry in West Virginia are among four battlefields sharing more than $1.7 million in funding.
The money comes from the Land and Water Conservation Fund established 50 years ago. The program is set to expire this year without action from Congress.
National Park Director Jonathan Jarvis says the fund has made it possible for communities to safeguard and preserve battlefields and undertake more than 40,000 outdoor recreation and conservation projects.
