ARLINGTON, Va. - Virginia transportation officials worked for hours to remove a huge makeshift shelter a homeless man built and lived in for 9 years.

Bernard Roulston of the Virginia Department of Transportation tells WJLA-TV ( that the structure in Arlington required 10 trucks to haul away on Monday.

The shelter was home to Francisco Fernandez Diaz, who is from El Salvador. Diaz, speaking through a translator, told WJLA that he spent a year building a fence, another year collecting items and a third year building his home. He used tree limbs, branches, ropes and clothing.

VDOT officials say the structure measured 150 feet by 150 feet.

After complaints from passers- by, VDOT officials acted, fearing it could be a haven for crime.

Diaz says he prefers staying on the streets.
