NoVa’s special election Tuesday may catch voters by surprise

WASHINGTON – Tuesday is election day for about 63,000 registered voters in Northern Virginia’s 45th District.

It’s a special election to replace Del. David Englin, D-Alexandria, who resigned his seat after an extramarital affair became public earlier this summer.

The campaign has lasted about a month and the three candidates running have struggled to get their message out in such a short time. The district includes parts of the city of Alexandria and parts of Arlington and Fairfax counties.

Voters must choose between current Alexandria councilman Democrat Rob Krupicka, Libertarian Justin Malkin and Republican Tim McGhee, who lost a race for the state Senate last November.

The district has gone heavily Democratic in past elections.

Gov. Bob McDonnell chose the date Sept. 4 for the election because there is another special election on Tuesday to fill a vacancy in the Norfolk area after the July death of Sen. Yvonne Miller.

The polls in the 45th District are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
