Loudoun Co. trial date set for Severance

LEESBURG, Va. – A Loudoun County judge has set the trial date for Charles Severance, the Virginia man who is the focus of three homicide investigations in Alexandria.

Severance will face a two-day jury trial for charges that he illegally possessed two handguns as a convicted felon. The trial is slated to begin Oct. 27 in Loudoun County Circuit Court.

Severance’s attorneys Edward Ungvarsky and Dan Goldman will be back before Judge Thomas D. Horne before then, on Sept. 4, to argue motions to suppress a statement and evidence.

Severance did not attend Tuesday morning’s court date.

Alexandria police meanwhile aren’t calling Severance a suspect, but say he is the focus of investigations into the killings of Ruthanne Lodato last February, Ronald Kirby in 2013 and Nancy Dunning in 2003.

Severance is known in Alexandria for his eccentric behavior while running for mayor of the city in 1996 and 2000.

A composite sketch of Lodato’s killer shows a man with an unkempt beard, who some believe resembles Severance.

Severance’s current Loudoun County charges stem from a conviction for carrying a concealed weapon in Rockingham County, Virginia, in 2005.
