United Way names Stacey Stewart new president

Tuesday - 9/25/2012, 1:22pm  ET

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) - United Way Worldwide has appointed Stacey Stewart as its new president of U.S. operations.

The position is a new one that the organization says reflects its commitment to its U.S.-based chapters.

In 2009, United Way of America merged with United Way International to create Alexandria, Va.-based United Way Worldwide, the world's largest privately supported charity. About two-thirds of United Way's local organizations are based in the United States, and they accounted for about 75 percent of the $5.14 billion that United Way raised last year.

Stewart's appointment is effective October 15. She had been an executive vice president at United Way Worldwide and previously worked for Fannie Mae, including a stint as president and CEO of the Fannie Mae Foundation.
