Alexandria facing a $14 million budget shortfall

Tuesday - 10/18/2011, 3:08pm  ET

Hank Silverberg,

WASHINGTON -- Alexandria could be facing a big budget shortfall by 2013.

The acting City Manager Bruce Johnson says operating costs are expected to go up by $24 million dollars, but revenue projections fall $10 million short. That leaves a $14 million gap if service and tax rates stay the same.

Johnson says that doesn't even include any increase requests from the school system or Metro. He thinks a slow down in the real estate market has led to the shortfall.

The city has a series of work sessions starting Tuesday to try and find ways to close the budget gap.
