RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Four Virginia communities will share more than $2.3 million in U.S. Department of Justice police hiring grants.

The grants were awarded this week through the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. They'll enable police departments to hire full-time officers at entry-level salaries and benefits for three years.

The funding will enable the hiring of six additional officers in the city of Norfolk, four in the city of Alexandria, two at the Bedford County sheriff's office and one at the Galax police department.

Nationally, 238 grants totaling more than $243 million were awarded.
