ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Hear ye, hear ye! The city of Alexandria has chosen a new town crier.

The Washington Post reports ( http://wapo.st/rh7C8T) that Ben Fiore-Walker, a 42-year-old pre-clinical science facilitator at Georgetown University's medical center, was chosen for the unpaid position on Saturday.

The position was last held by William North-Rudin, who served for five years before moving out of the state.

To take the town crier title, Fiore-Walker had to beat out 11 other contestants who performed before a six-judge panel. It will now be his duty to make proclamations and opening remarks at events including the city's anniversary celebration and the George Washington Birthday parade. His first assignment will be opening the City Council meeting Sept. 27.
