WASHINGTON -- Traffic patterns across the region will begin changing this week as thousands of military-related workers move job locations as part of the military base realignment.

Included in this week's changes is a move that will eventually relocate 6,400 workers to the Mark Center in Alexandria, half of whom are expected to be moved by fall.

Virginia has now set up a Traffic Management Task Force to deal with some of the congestion in real time.

"We are actually going to have people out there," says Virginia Transportation Secretary Sean Connaughton. "We're gonna monitor the traffic flow. We're gonna try to adjust the traffic signals based on the conditions themselves."

Connaughton says that means the task force will coordinate with Alexandria, Arlington and Fairfax counties regarding backups on roads that connect to the Interstate.

The task force will also be able to modify various road projects such as construction and mass transit to deal with specific tieups. For example, an $80 million ramp from the HOV lanes being built by the state is still two years away and an environmental study is underway.

Alexandria launched its new DASH Mark Center express service on Monday.
