WASHINGTON - Need a little help waking up this morning? One of the nation's best coffee shops is right in the area.

M.E. Swing Coffee House won the KRUPS "Cup O' Joe" Award for best local coffee shop in D.C.

The award, given to five stores in New York, and one each in other big cities across the country, honors locals' favorite coffee shops -- places that give you something more than the big chains.

M.E. Swing is on the corner of 17th and G streets in Northwest, right by the White House, but you can't see its flashback furnishings or smell the coffee, unless you know to look for it or go inside.

For more than 70 years Swing's was at 10th and E streets, but all of the historic mahogany and mirrors made the move to G Street back in 1994.

If you do want to stop by, be sure to check the hours -- it's only open on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

You also can get a taste at the company's roastery at 612 South Pickett Street in Alexandria, where the beans are prepped for the store, or for you to take home.
