Pet of the Week: 2017 pets

Pet of the Week: Nino For the week of Dec. 25 Meet Nino! The Humane Rescue Alliance sees unique-looking animals often at its adoption centers, usually dogs that are a combination of a number of breeds. But Nino might just be the most unique. This big boy is tall and lanky, with a brindle coat that features coarse “wirey” patches of hair around his neck and feet. Unfortunately, Nino’s ears were cropped at some point as well — a practice that serves no purpose and is painful for the dog. Those features combine to give this 5-year-old a unique (and serious)  look. But Nino is a wallflower — shy, yet charming. He’s looking for an owner with a relaxed lifestyle who will help him come out of his shell. Some love and attention will allow Nino to blossom! Come out today to meet Nino at the Oglethorpe Street Adoption Center and give this guy a new loving home. See video of Nino here.
Pet of the Week: Bruno For the week of Dec. 18 Meet Bruno! If you have been looking for the consummate “lap dog, ” Bruno is it. This 11-year-old has a sweet personality and cannot wait to find a warm human to cuddle with. While small and “senior,” Bruno is still active and spry, willing and able to make the leap from the floor to the living room sofa with no problems. Bruno was surrendered to HRA when his owner/parents became ill and could no longer care for him. After spending more than 10 years with one owner, Bruno is more than ready to find some stability again in his life. Bruno qualifies for our “Boomers Buddies” program, so if you are over the age of 50, you can adopt him with no adoption fee. Stop by the Oglethorpe Street adoption center and meet Bruno today! See video of Bruno here.
Pet of the Week: Choco For the week of Dec. 11 Meet Choco! This handsome 9-month-old puppy is a real head-turner. His tri-color coat and mask give him a unique look. In addition to his good looks, Choco is a sweet boy who loves to please, will sit for treats and has a wonderful overall demeanor. As he continues to mature, Choco would love lots of exercise, and he can’t wait to play fetch in the park. Choco came to the Humane Rescue Alliance when he was found running at large several times in D.C. He seems to do well with other dogs and would benefit from consistent training and regular activity. Come out to the alliance’s Oglethorpe Street adoption center and meet this good-looking boy. He can’t wait to meet his forever family.
Pet of the Week: Musa For the week of Dec. 4 Meet Musa! This 8-year-old gal has had quite a story. Her life began in Puerto Rico. Three days before Hurricane Maria made landfall, her family left her with a neighbor. Musa survived the hurricane, but her family did not return to care for her. Soon, Musa found herself on a rescue transport to D.C., and she can’t wait to find a new forever family. She is active and loves to go for walks. Her sweet, fun-loving temperament makes her a perfect partner for an active adult. However, “sharing” her food bowl and other resources is not her strong suit, so she would be best in a home without small children. While she loves adventures, she will be thrilled with her own home, where she can curl up on the couch with her new family. If you are over 50, we’ll waive the adoption fee as part of the Boomers’ Buddies program. Come out to the Oglethorpe Street adoption center and meet Musa today!
Pet of the Week: Bubbles For the week of Nov. 27 Meet Bubbles! This 8-year-old gentleman was surrendered to the Humane Rescue Alliance when his owner was suffering from debilitating arthritis. Bubbles himself has arthritis, but he’s doing his best to get around to smell and see what the world has to offer. Bubbles like his walks — and he needs them, as he is a bit overweight — but he is probably much more interested in finding a warm lap or a cozy bed by a fireplace with his new forever family. Bubbles is mellow and easygoing, loves people and really needs to find a home since he has spent the last 8 years in the same place. He can’t wait to meet you, so come on out to meet Bubbles at our Oglethorpe Street Adoption Center.
Pet of the Week: Prince For the week of Nov. 20 Meet Prince! This gorgeous 8 year-old boy came to the Humane Rescue Alliance when his owners were no longer able to care for him. Upon arrival to the shelter, he was given some much-needed medical attention, as he was skinny, needed to put on weight, and needed all of his essential vaccinations. A large dog, Prince is very sweet and gentle, despite getting off to a rough start in life. He loves all of his new shelter friends, both human and canine. He’s curious, loves his toys and can’t wait to take walks to see what the world has to offer. If you’re looking to give a great dog like Prince the home he deserves, come meet him at the Oglethorpe Street location today.
Pet of the Week: Man Man For the week of Nov. 13 Meet Man Man! Man Man is a sweet, loving elderly gentleman who can’t wait to find his forever family. Even though he’s a senior dog, this very cute little guy would make a perfect companion. He loves cuddling up on the couch and watching the news or even a good documentary. Man Man also loves taking long, slow walks and smelling the flowers, as well as making new friends! At 12 years old, Man Man qualifies for our Boomers Buddies program, so if you are over 50 and want to give this guy a great home in his senior years, we will waive the adoption fee. If you are interested in meeting a guy like Man Man, come see him at our Oglethorpe Street Adoption Center.
Pet of the Week: Claire For the week of Nov. 6 Meet Claire! Claire came to the Humane Rescue Alliance from a rescue at the end of August with nine puppies. She was a wonderful mother and dutifully nursed the pups in her den at the Humane Rescue Alliance. Visitors to HRA watched the puppies grow both in the den and on our Puppy Cam for several weeks. The extra-cute puppies have all been adopted, and now it’s Claire’s turn! This 6-year-old lady has been at the shelter for two months and has made many friends with our shelter staff, but she is more than ready to find her own home, where she can relax in a big comfy bed and get lots of overdue attention. Claire is very sweet and gentle, but would do best in a home without small children, as she is not fond of sharing her food and she’s not as energetic as she once was as a younger dog. But she loves older kids. If you’re 50 and older and adopt Claire, the fee is completely waived! So come out and meet Claire at our Oglethorpe Street adoption center. She can’t wait to go home with you! See a video of Claire on the HRA’s YouTube page.
Pet of the Week: Poochie For the week of Oct. 30 Meet Poochie! Poochie is a lovely senior lady who is ready to find her new home.  Unfortunately for Poochie, her human recently passed away, so she has come to the Humane Rescue Alliance to find her new forever family. A cocker spaniel mix, she has a beautiful curly blonde coat, which is perfect for cuddling with people – her absolute favorite activity! Poochie is 8 years old, suffers from arthritis and could stand to lose a bit of weight. But she is still very active, and loves to play fetch and go for walks. She clearly loves people and gets along fine with other dogs. If you have a warm lap and some love to give, she would be a perfect companion. Come out and meet Poochie at our Oglethorpe Street location today!
Pet of the Week: Banjo For the week of Oct. 23 Meet Banjo! Banjo is a sweet, fun loving goofball of a puppy. At six months old, Banjo is happy-go-lucky and lives to please but also needs as much love and interaction as possible, as he is still learning his way in the world. His medium size and soft, fawn coat are certainly attractive, but his temperament and love of people will win you over. As with most puppies his age, Banjo needs to be active, with several walks each day and lots of play time with his new family. Banjo seems to like other dogs and would do well in a home with kids. Come out to our Oglethorpe Street Adoption Center and meet Banjo today!
Pet of the Week: Busy For the week of Oct. 16 Meet Busy! This senior pup has been through a lot in the last month, but you certainly wouldn’t know it. His joyful, sweet disposition is infectious, and he’s sure to put a smile on the face of everyone he meets. Sadly, Busy came to the Humane Rescue Alliance in bad shape, and required an amputation of his left hind leg. Thanks to the care of its medical team, he’s since recovered incredibly and is ready to find a loving, new home where he can spend his golden years. Think this sweet, 11-year-old senior is the companion for you? Meet him at the Humane Rescue Alliance Oglethorpe Street adoption center. He can’t wait to meet you! Pet of the Week: Tessa For the week of Oct. 9 Meet Tessa, a 10-year-old beagle mix who somehow lost her way and was found as a stray in Southeast D.C. While a little shy, Tessa is a typical beagle: She loves to have her nose down sniffing all there is to smell. She loves people, is easygoing and very easy to handle. Also in typical beagle fashion, Tessa seems cheerful and happy and wants nothing more than to be with her humans, whether on walking adventures or snuggled up on the couch. Her medium size makes her great for any home.  If you are over 50, Tessa qualifies for our Boomers Buddies program, and her adoption fee will be waived. Come out and meet Tessa at our Oglethorpe Street adoption center today.  She can’t wait to meet you!  (Photo courtesy Humane Rescue Alliance)
Pet of the Week: Marzipan  For the week of Oct. 3 Two-year-old Marzipan is just as sweet as her name suggests. She was found as a stray, so we don’t know much about her past, but we do know that she’s a fun-loving cuddlebug who loves people and will crawl right into your lap if you let her. Staff and volunteers report that she is a “velcro dog” — she wants to be by her people as much as possible. She’s quite stressed in the shelter and would love to go to a new home soon where she can get all the love and attention she deserves. She would do best in a quiet home without cats or small animals. Meet this sweet girl at our Oglethorpe Street adoption center today. (Photo courtesy Humane Rescue Alliance)
Pet of the Week: Deebo For the week of Sept. 25 Meet Deebo, a 5-year-old hunk looking for a loving forever home. Deebo recently came to the Humane Rescue Alliance when his owner could no longer care for him. Almost immediately after arriving at the shelter, the HRA Medical Team began caring for Deebo and performed needed eye surgery on him. Deebo is recovering well, but still has some breed-specific issues that need some TLC.  This guy would love a home where his owner(s) are willing and able to care for him.  Deebo is VERY sweet – loves kids and other dogs!   His is also a goofy guy and can’t help but make people smile. Despite some of his health issues, Deebo is a pretty active guy and loves to trot around and play! If you think you can provide the home that  Deebo needs and deserves, please visit him at our Oglethorpe Street Adoption Center! (Courtesy HRA)
????????????????????????????????????
Pet of the Week: Victoria For the week of Sept. 18 Meet Victoria! This big, beautiful lady cannot wait to find her forever home! While she’s a big girl, looks aren’t everything. Victoria is a sweetheart and has lived with children, both young and older, and just loves to be around people. Unfortunately, one of Victoria’s family members developed allergies, so she was surrendered to HRA, where she is waiting for a loving new home. A very friendly 5 year-old, even with strangers, Victoria is known for her enthusiastic tail wagging! Victoria likes to chase cats, so she would do best in a home without felines. But she plays well with other dogs and people! Come out to our Oglethorpe adoption center and make a play date with Victoria. Maybe you’ll find your perfect match!  (Courtesy HRA)
Pet of the Week: Sparklie  For the week of Sept. 11
Meet  Sparklie! This little lady is 12 years old and looking for her forever home.  As a senior,  she is laid back and likes to relax, so a home without  children under 12 years old would be best. Sparklie’s adopter should be ready to enjoy her penchant for warm beds and very casual walks. Sparklie is a little on the on the plump side, so her adopters should be willing to help her lose some weight and live a healthier lifestyle. Sparklie may be older, but she is still learning how to share her food and toys. The adoptions team at HRA will be able to help adopters learn to work with her on this. So, if you live a relaxed lifestyle and have space in your heart for a senior pet, please visit Sparklie at our Oglethorpe St. location.  She can’t wait to meet you!   (Courtesy HRA)
Pet of the Week: Roxana For the week of Sept. 4 Meet Roxanna! This senior gal is just looking a home to call her own after her owner surrendered her to HRA prior to entering a nursing home. At ten years old, Roxanna is an ideal companion for someone looking for an emotionally secure, mutually satisfying, low maintenance relationship! She wants to sit at your feet, walk by your side and be your devoted companion forever. Roxanna has a medical issue that is being treated by HRA but is available for adoption now. She qualifies for our Boomers Buddies program, which means her adoption fee will be waived for an adopter over the age of 50 years old. Come out to today to meet Roxanna! She’s currently residing at our Oglethorpe Street Adoption Center. (Courtesy Humane Rescue Alliance)
Pet of the week Tank
Pet of the Week: Tank For the week of Aug. 28 Meet Tank! Tank is a four year-old guy who is very excited to find a home. He came to HRA when his owner was no longer able to keep him. This lovable guy lived with a family with children who loved him very much, and he can’t wait to have a family again. A high-energy dog who needs exercise and some training, he doesn’t mind being around other, calmer dog. Cats, however, aren’t a good idea. Overall, Tank is a silly, sweet, active dog who deserves a great home. Come by our Oglethorpe Street adoption center and meet Tank….maybe you will provide his forever home! See video here. (Courtesy Humane Rescue Alliance)
Pet of the Week: Lady For the week of Aug. 21 Meet Lady! This sweet girl cannot wait to find her forever home.  At 13 years old, you might think she was destined to be a couch potato, but she still loves to go for walks, meet new people friends and stop to smell the flowers. At her age, Lady has learned what makes people happy and she can’t wait to show her new family — the faster she wags her tail, the more her body wiggles. Lady is a delightful dog, but she does suffer from some skin allergies and not every type of food agrees with her. However, that doesn’t stop her from being as sweet and social.  Come out to our Oglethorpe Street adoptions center and she will show you her adorable wiggly greeting that keeps everyone smiling. (Courtesy Humane Rescue Alliance)
Meet Dace.  Dace is an eight year old gentleman who cannot wait to find his new forever family! Dace came to the Humane Rescue Alliance when his family moved and they could no longer take care of him. This little guy loves people, but would do best in a home without small children, as he like to move at his own pace. Because of his size, Dace would be great for a family that perhaps lives in a small apartment or house. Three nice leisurely walks each day and a comfortable place to call his own would be ideal for this guy. Dace qualifies for our Boomers Buddies program, so his adoption fee is waived for an adopter over the age of 50. Come out and meet Dace at our Oglethorpe Street location and make his dreams come true!
Pet of the Week: Dace For the week of Aug. 14 Meet Dace. Dace is an 8-year-old gentleman who cannot wait to find his new forever family. Dace came to the Humane Rescue Alliance when his family moved, and they could no longer take care of him. This little guy loves people but would do best in a home without small children, as he likes to move at his own pace. Because of his size, Dace would be great for a family that perhaps lives in a small apartment or house. Three, nice leisurely walks each day and a comfortable place to call his own would be ideal for this guy. Dace qualifies for our Boomers Buddies program, so his adoption fee is waived for an adopter over the age of 50. Come out and meet Dace at our Oglethorpe Street location and make his dreams come true. (Courtesy Humane Rescue Alliance)
Pet of the Week: Roxanne For the week of Aug. 7 Meet Roxanne. This 8-year-old petite lady would love to find a forever lap. Calm and a bit shy, yet still charming, little Roxanne is searching for a patient owner with a relaxed lifestyle. Weighing less than 5 pounds, Roxanne needs gentle guidance to gain confidence, but once she does she will blossom. Come out and meet Roxanne at our Oglethorpe Street Adoption Center. She can’t wait to meet you! (Courtesy Humane Rescue Alliance )
Pet of the Week: T-Bird  For the week of July 31 T-Bird came to the Humane Rescue Alliance when an Animal Control Officer found him as a stray in a yard next to a vacant building. A very active dog, T-Bird loves to go on walks and see what the world has to offer. T-Bird is a big boy and likes to fly solo, so he would be best in a home without small children and without other pets. At almost 7 years old, T-Bird is simply ready to find his forever home where he can relax, go for long walks and hang out with his new people. He has been lovingly sponsored by an HRA donor, so his adoption fee will be waived for qualified adopters. Come out to our Oglethorpe Street Adoption Center and meet T-Bird today, because he can’t wait to meet you! (Courtesy Humane Rescue Alliance )
Pet of the Week: Mr. Magic  For the week of July 24 Meet Mr. Magic, this week’s Pet of the Week! This big guy is super sweet and can’t wait to find a lap where he can rest his rather large head. Mr. Magic  loves to be around people, especially when he’s getting all the attention, which of course he deserves. At 5 years old, Mr. Magic is done with his puppy stage, but still likes a good chew toy. He is positive for heartworm and is receiving treatment, but that means exercise restriction for him. He is also recovering from a gunshot wound, which slows him down a bit. But don’t let that fool you: Mr. Magic is a strong, stout boy and still loves to play, get out for walks and see what the world has to offer. He gets along well with cats and has been around small children his entire life. At 95 pounds, Mr. Magic’s adopters should be strong enough to handle his size and strength on walks …. and when he wants to sit in your lap! Come out to our Oglethorpe Street adoption center to meet Mr. Magic! (Humane Rescue Alliance)
Pet of the Week: Wiggly For the week of July 17 Meet Wiggly: As you can guess, Wiggly’s name says a lot about her. She is a happy, energetic young gal who can’t wait to find her forever home. Wiggly ended up at the Humane Rescue Alliance after a police officer picked her up when she was running at large. Call it good luck, as the police officer gathered Wiggly and brought her to HRA to either reunite with her owner or to find a new forever home for this sweet girl. Since arriving at the shelter, Wiggly is being loved and cared for. This 2-year-old has a terrific personality and loves everyone she meets. She also likes to play with other dogs, so she would love to go home to a new best friend! If you’re looking for a sweet, goofy, wiggly friend, come visit her today at the Humane Rescue Alliance’s Oglethorpe Street shelter. (Courtesy Humane Rescue Alliance)
Pet of the Week: Odysseus For the week of July 10 True to his namesake, Odysseus has been on quite a journey. He came to the Humane Rescue Alliance in February when his owner could no longer care for him. Sadly, it was on Valentine’s Day. And this sweet, handsome guy, who was featured as Pet of the Week back in April, is still here and really can’t wait to find a new home. The staff and volunteers at HRA report that Odysseus is very affectionate and intelligent. A senior dog at 10 years old, he doesn’t have puppy energy, but he does love walks, hikes, and to play outside. Odysseus can’t go to a home with other dogs, but he would love an adults-only home where he can have all of the attention. His adoption has been sponsored by a generous donor, so there will be no adoption fee for him. If you have a space in your heart for this sweet senior, you can find him at Oglethorpe Street! (Humane Rescue Alliance)
Pet of the Week: Kobe For the week of July 3  Are you looking for a big, goofy, 1-year-old pup to bring some loving into your life? If so, meet Kobe. Kobe is a handsome, happy-go-lucky young dog looking to find his forever home as soon as possible. He came to the Humane Rescue Alliance because his previous owners could no longer care for him. Although he’s a bit “blue,”  having been in the shelter for nearly two months now, he is  very excited to find a family to call his own. Kobe loves walks and time with adults, but is not a great fit for a home with children or other animals. Please come by our Oglethorpe Street location. We promise adopting Kobe will be a slam dunk decision! (Courtesy Humane Rescue Alliance )
Pet of the Week: Nova For the week of June 26 Nova is a 3-year-old girl — a bit on the shy side, but looking for a calm, quiet home where she can blossom. Nova was found as a stray with an untreated, badly broken right front leg. After examining Nova, our medical team determined that amputation was the best course of treatment, so she is now a “tri-pawd.” Nova is still learning to get around on three legs, but she’s doing a great job and learning quickly. Because Nova had a rough early life and is shy, she would do well with adopters who will be patient with her and help her slowly become more used to the world around her. Come out and meet Nova at the HRA Oglethorpe Street Adoption Center. She can’t wait to find her forever home. And be sure to check out her video!
Pet of the Week: Rusty For the week of June 19 Meet Rusty! This 10-year-old is actually nothing like his name. There’s no rust in this little guy! Rusty enjoys playing chase, tug-of-war and going on walks.  He is easily excited and will twirl in circles for minutes at a time. He also enjoys sunbathing, being outside and meeting new people. All of that excitement leads to his second favorite pastime: naps! Don’t be deceived by his photos: Rusty is a only 21 pounds, a perfect size for just about any family. Rusty gets along well with other dogs, and has met children of all ages. Because he’s a senior citizen, he can be independent and confident but he knows how to get your attention and will demand that his cuddle needs are met. Bonus: If you are over the age of 50, the adoption fee is waived as part of our Boomers’ Buddies program. If you would like to meet Rusty, please feel free to contact our Oglethorpe adoption center at adoptOGL@humanerescuealliance.org.  (Courtesy Humane Rescue Alliance )
Pet of the Week: Colby For the week of June 12 Meet Colby!  This good looking 1-year-old boy is ready to be in a loving, stable home. Colby came to HRA when his owner had to move and could no longer take care of him. Colby lived with several other animals, so he’s hoping that in his new home he’ll get some attention! He is playful, sweet, and great with everyone he meets — generally, he is irresistible! He loves to be outside and would just LOVE a yard where he can roll around and bask in the sun, but he also has dreams of having a big comfy bed to sleep on so he can catch up on his doggy sleep. Colby does suffer from a knee issue that will require treatment, but HRA vets will educate the potential adopter on the process and treatment. Does Colby sound like the right fit for you? Come meet him today at the Oglethorpe adoption center. (Courtesy Humane Rescue Alliance)
Pet of the Week: Rumple  For the week of June 5 Meet Rumple! This little guy came to the Humane Rescue Alliance looking more like a sheep than a dog: His coat was completely overgrown and matted prior to his arrival. After an extended grooming session (see video), Rumple is a new man. At 8 years old, Rumple has some medical issues that will require attention from his adopter, but he is good-natured, mellow and loves to hang out with people. His small stature makes him easy to handle, and he would do well in a home of any size. Rumple would be best being the only dog in his new home, as he wants – and deserves – all the attention from his humans.  Come out to meet Rumple at the Oglethorpe Street adoption center today. He can’t wait to meet you! (Courtesy Humane Rescue Alliance )
Pet of the Week: Kenny For the week of May 30 Kenny is 10-month-old bundle of sweetness. His long body, short legs and beautiful brown eyes, along with his tricolor coat, will win your heart. Basically: His cuteness level is off the charts. Kenny came to HRA from a shelter in Alabama and would really like to find his forever home where he can concentrate on some serious couch time with his favorite human. Kenny seems to get along well with other dogs and simply loves people.  Come by the Oglethorpe Street Adoption Center to meet Kenny and make all of his dreams come true. (Courtesy Humane Rescue Alliance)
Pet of the Week: Peak For the week of May 22 Peak is a very handsome, laid back and mellow boy who is looking for his forever home. From a shelter in Birmingham, Alabama, this southern gentleman is 3 years old with deep brown eyes, a golden coat and a very sweet face, making it quite easy to fall in love with him. Peak gets along well with other dogs, especially those that are more on the mellow side — and he loves people. Peak can be playful, but comes across as shy when first meeting someone. Stop by our Oglethorpe Street adoption center and meet this gentle boy.  He can’t wait to meet you! (Courtesy Humane Rescue Alliance)
Pet of the Week: Watson  For the week of May 15  Let this little guy solve the mysteries of your heart! Meet Watson,  a 7-year-old pup looking to find the loyal companion that he deserves. Watson came to the Humane Rescue Alliance because his previous owner could no longer take care of him, due to some medical issues that require continuing care. He is a very happy-go-lucky dog who would love to find a home with a couch he can curl up on at the end of the day. Watson is a pretty mellow guy, but also enjoys walks around the neighborhood and meeting other dogs. Please come by the adoption center at 71 Oglethorpe Street and meet him soon and perhaps he could be the Watson to your Sherlock! (Courtesy Humane Rescue Alliance)
Pet of the Week: Dulce For the week of May 8 Dulce is a 3 year-old girl who has made quite a journey to our nation’s capital.  Originally from Puerto Rico, she came to us through a transfer program with the Humane Society of the United States. This little girl, at only 19 pounds, has a sweet disposition, but is a little timid at first meeting. Once she has a home of her own, however, she’ll be a very happy pup. With a difficult early life — heartworm positive and a troublesome left rear leg — Dulce is looking for a forever family that will take care of her while she gives lots of love in return. Dulce would be best in a home with older children or adults, and needs to be the only animal in the home. A calm, nurturing environment would be best for her. Come out and meet Dulce at the Humane Rescue Alliance’s Oglethorpe Street Adoption Center. She can’t wait to meet you! (Courtesy Humane Rescue Alliance)
Pet of the Week: Walnut  For the week of May 1  At first glance, Walnut may seem like a big, tough lady, but she’s really a big baby. Walnut recently arrived at the Humane Rescue Alliance when a good Samaritan found her tied up to a fence with another dog by a school. Since she’s been at the shelter, she’s  been getting lots of love and affection, which she needs and deserves. The medical staff has been taking excellent care of Walnut, too. At 8 years old,  Walnut has slowed down a bit, but at 104 lbs., that’s not surprising! The HRA staff is working very hard to help Walnut socialize. Once she is comfortable, Walnut loves to show her silly side, resting her head in your lap or rolling around in the grass. Walnut would be best in a very quiet, calm home, with no small children. If you’re ready to open your heart and home to a shy, beautiful, drooly girl,  meet Walnut  at the Oglethorpe St. Adoption Center! Added bonus: If you’re over the age of 50, Walnut’s adoption fee is waved as part of our Boomer’s Buddies program.
Pet of the Week: Odysseus For the week of April 24 True to his namesake, Odysseus has been on quite a journey. He came to the Humane Rescue Alliance in February when his owner could no longer care for him. Sadly, it was on Valentine’s Day.  The staff and volunteers at HRA report that  Odysseus is very affectionate and intelligent. At 10 years old, he doesn’t have puppy energy, but he does love walks, hikes and playing outside. Odysseus can’t go to a home with other dogs, but he would love an adults-only home where he can have all of the attention.  If you have a space in your heart for this sweet senior, you can find him at the Oglethorpe Adoption Center.  (Courtesy Human Rescue Alliance)
Pet of the Week: Dena For the week of April 17 Dena is a 5-year-old lady who is so ready to find her forever home. She came to the Humane Rescue Alliance after she was found tied up and in serious need of medical attention. Thanks to the dedicated and talented staff at the Humane Rescue Alliance, she is doing a lot better now! Dena loves people and dogs and is very smart. She loves to play, but is over all of that puppy energy. Dena embodies what’s best about dogs — their forgiving nature. Despite everything she has been through, she wants nothing more than a loving home where she can be your best friend. If you would like to give Dena a second chance, you will never regret it. (Courtesy Human Rescue Alliance)
Pet of the Week: Kash For the week of April 10 Oh man, does the staff at the Humane Rescue Alliance love 11-month-old Kash! This pit bull mix was surrendered to the Humane Rescue Alliance in March. He was a little bummed out when he had to leave his home, but he still loves people — all people. When his kennel door opens, he simply wiggles his backside and rests his head in your hand. Kash loves to play with toys, is curious about birds and is selective with other dogs. If you think he’s the right guy for you, visit our Oglethorpe Street adoption center today.  (Courtesy Human Rescue Alliance)
Summer-time and the loving's easy! Summer is a three-year old lady with a lot of energy who will keep you laughing. Summer came to the Humane Rescue Alliance from Alabama in February and has been waiting for her forever home since! She loves going for runs with HRA volunteers on the weekends and going on long walks during the week. She gives fantastic kisses and loves cuddles. She would be best in a forever home with an owner who is interested in training and providing plenty of exercise to help manage her energy. Even though she is an active lady, she prefers the company of calmer dogs and cannot go home to any kids, as she prefers to have all of the attention. If Summer is the type of dog you're looking for, you'll find her waiting for you at Oglethorpe Street!

Pet of the Week: Talleyrand For the week of March 27 This week’s Pet of the Week is Talleyrand, a 5-month-old kitten with a remarkable story. When she was just 2 months old, Talleyrand arrived at the Humane Rescue Alliance paralyzed with no deep pain or movement in her hind legs or tail. Our Animal Control Officer found Talleyrand after receiving reports of a kitten trapped in a storm drain.  They found Talleyrand and confirmed her injuries, which had been left untreated for several days. X-rays confirmed she fractured her L3 vertebra and shifted her spinal column. Shortly after arriving at HRA’s medical center, Talleyrand started acupuncture treatment and has since regained feeling as well as movement in her hind feet and tail. Before treatment she wasn’t able to urinate or defecate on her own, with staff having to express her bladder. She can now get herself in and out of her litter box and is making amazing progress. She’s also receiving electroacupuncture to help stimulate the nerves and to increase the effect from the acupuncture treatments. Thanks to the care and determination from our medical team, Talleyrand took her first steps toward life as a normal cat and is expected to be able to walk on her own again. While she may never be your standard kitty that can climb, jump, or perch up high, Talleyrand is perfectly able to live a happy, comfortable life. She is smart, curious and loves toys, though she is still learning her kitten manners and likes to play with things she is not “supposed” to play with. In order to keep playing and walking, Talleyrand is looking for a home dedicated to accommodating her limitations and ongoing treatment needs for the rest of her life.  She loves her caretakers at HRA, and they love her, but she is ready for the next part of her story. If you are interested in adopting Talleyrand, please email adoptOGL@humanerescuealliance.org, or better yet, come meet her in-person at the Oglethorpe Street Adoption Center. Pet of the Week: Bella For the week of March 20 Bella is a 3-year-old pit bull/terrier mix that loves people, but might be a little shy at first. She would benefit from training that improves her confidence and allows her to blossom into the lovable dog we know she is! Bella has a sweet nature about her and loves playing with people, so a family that will spend quality time with her would be ideal. Bella is still learning to walk on a leash but has improved in recent weeks. She is eager to please, and with a patient owner, she will learn quickly.  Come to the Oglethorpe Street Adoption Center to meet Bella. She can’t wait to meet you! (Courtesy Human Rescue Alliance)
Pet of the Week: Julep For the week of March 13 This week’s Pet of the Week is a special case. Julep is truly a senior dog. At 18 years old, she finds herself in need of  a home, as she came to Humane Rescue Alliance when her owner passed away. Now, she is in search of a new home where she’ll be just as loved. Julep doesn’t need much: just a lot of love and someone who wants a quiet companion. She would need to be the only dog in the home due to her age, as she doesn’t have the tolerance for too much dog energy. Julep would be thrilled with a great big dog bed to sprawl out on and toys to chew on. She doesn’t require too much exercise and is already pretty well-trained. Senior dogs like Julep are truly special and have a unique type of love to give. Come to the Oglethorpe Street Adoption Center to meet Julep. She can’t wait to meet you.   (Courtesy Human Rescue Alliance)
Pet of the Week: Dingo For the week of March 6 Meet Dingo! This 7-month-old pup came to the Humane Rescue Alliance when his most recent owners could no longer care for him. Dingo has bounced around a bit in his short life and is ready to find his forever family. Dingo would love nothing more than a family that loves to play, jog and explore outside with him. He’s pretty smart, and with continued encouragement and training will learn tricks and manners quickly. Does Dingo seem like the pup for you? Meet him at the Humane Rescue Alliance New York Avenue adoption center. As a special thank you, Dingo’s adoption fee has been waived as part of HRA’s Hidden Gem program.  (Courtesy Human Rescue Alliance)
Meet Chickey! This beautiful 1 ½ year old is not a chicken. She’s a sweet boxer/American bulldog mix. (Courtesy Human Rescue Alliance)
Pet of the Week: Chickey For the week of Feb. 27 Meet Chickey! This beautiful 1.5-year-old is not a chicken. She’s a sweet boxer/American bulldog mix that came to the Humane Rescue Alliance after she was found wandering on the streets of D.C. She is certainly happy to be safe and sound at the shelter, but she is eager to find a wonderful family to call her own. Very playful and friendly, Chickey can be shy at first, but she will soon be trying to jump in your lap! She would do very well in an active and loving family that encourages opportunities to play, run and socialize. But she would also like a family that enjoys cuddling with Chickey at night. Please come down to see Chickey at HRA’s Oglethorpe Street Adoption Center where she will make you smile!

Pet of the Week: Paige For the week of Feb. 20 Meet Paige, a two-year-old bull dog mix who’s a real cutie pie. Paige was taken to the Humane Rescue Alliance by a concerned citizen who found her wandering by herself. Sadly, no one ever came looking for her so now she’s waiting patiently — or as patiently as a young dog can — for a new family. Paige is basically a mellow girl but she definitely has her energetic moments! She enjoys outdoor activities, including the regular walks and jogs she takes with shelter volunteers. She’s also a world class snuggler, who would love sharing quality cuddle time with a person of her own. Could that be you? Stop by the Humane Rescue Alliance’s Oglethorpe Street Adoption Center today and find out. (Courtesy Humane Rescue Alliance)
Pet of the Week: Caesar For the week of Feb. 13  Meet Caesar, a very handsome, large Rottweiler who is very happy and can’t wait to find a new home. Weighing in at just over 100 pounds, Caesar is looking for a home that loves and appreciates big dogs. Given his size and strength, this big boy needs to go to a home with a confident handler that’s able to teach him some good leash manners. He’s not overly exuberant when he’s on walks but sometimes if he smells something interesting he tends to pull a bit. At four years old, he’s fully grown and over all of that puppy nonsense. He was previously owned, and his last family said that he has lived with small children and generally has good manners in the house. Caesar has lived with another dog, so he may be fine to go to a household that already has a canine to be a new buddy for him, as long as the two are introduced properly. If you’re interested in adopting Caesar, come visit him at the Oglethorpe adoption center!  (Courtesy Humane Rescue Alliance)
Pet of the Week: Dixie  For the week of Feb. 6  Meet Dixie, a beautiful female hound mix. This sweet girl arrived at the Humane Rescue Alliance recently from a partner shelter in southern Virginia and is eagerly awaiting her forever home. Dixie is happy and playful, with a tail that rarely stops wagging! At 4 years old, she’s past the annoying puppy stage but is still very active and would benefit from some manners training. She loves people and seems to enjoy the company of other dogs. Her big brown eyes are hard to resist and her large, velvety ears are just begging to be stroked. If you’re looking for a happy dog to bring some joy into your life, stop by HRA’s Oglethorpe Street Adoption Center and meet Dixie soon! (Courtesy Humane Rescue Alliance)
Pet of the Week: Ruckus  For the week of Jan. 30 Meet Ruckus: He’s anything but a “ruckus.”  Very sweet and calm, this 8 year-old gentleman is looking for a good home where he will be loved and nursed back to health. Ruckus came to HRA after a rough time, but the medical team has worked hard to give this little guy a chance to be adopted. He has overcome some challenges, including an injured tail when he was found. If you give him a chance, his gentle nature and sweet disposition will win your heart. We suggest a home without kids, because he does like to guard his food. Otherwise, this playful beagle mix will make a really great companion for an owner who is willing to work with him and give him all the love he deserves. Come meet Ruckus today at the Humane Rescue Alliance’s Oglethorpe Street adoption center.   (Humane Rescue Alliance)
Pet of the Week: Rosay For the week of Jan. 23 If you’re looking for a super sweet pup to complete your family, look no further. Rosay is a 4-year-old pit mix who came to the Humane Rescue Alliance when her previous owner couldn’t continue to care for her. While missing her previous family, Rosay seems to be a happy girl. She previously lived in a household with children, seniors and adults, so she seems to get along well with everyone. She also loves other dogs and is always looking for a new canine buddy! Rosay is not, however, a fan of cats so it would probably be best if there weren’t any felines in the home. Rosay has good house manners and really just wants to be in a home where she can give and receive lots of love and affection. She enjoys treats so if her new owners have lots of treats around, she’s sure to bond quickly! Stop by the HRA Oglethorpe Street Adoption Center and meet Rosay soon; she’ll be waiting.    (Humane Rescue Alliance)
Pet of the Week: Storm For the week of Jan. 17 Meet Storm. Don’t let his name mislead you: this guy is actually a very mellow fellow with a lot of love to give.  Storm is an 11-year-old Rottweiler mix, a senior dog who was brought to the Humane Rescue Alliance recently when his previous owner could no longer afford to care for him. At just over 100 pounds, he is a gentle giant who loves to be petted and get belly rubs. At his age, he’s not looking to run around all day and would much prefer to nap with his human friends or maybe curl up on a soft dog bed with a toy. If you’re looking for an easy-going companion to spend your days with, Storm may be perfect for you. He’s hoping for a quiet, adults-only home where he can get all of the love and attention.  While he doesn’t require a lot of exercise, Storm’s mind is still sharp and he would enjoy some puzzle toys in his new home.  Storm qualifies for HRA’s Boomers’ Buddies program, so if you are over 50 years of age, his adoption fee will be waived. Stop by the New York Avenue Adoption Center to meet Storm! (Humane Rescue Alliance)
Pet of the Week: Dory For the week of Jan. 9  This 1-year-old hound mix needs a very special forever home.  Dory is deaf and needs an owner or family who is dedicated to helping her learn and thrive despite this setback. She is a very loving dog who is extremely sweet and gentle — even a little shy. She does like to jump up to get a better look out the windows to see what’s going on since she can’t hear (an expected behavior for a dog like this). Dory plays well with other dogs and loves attention and affection. If you think you have the perfect home for Dory, she’ll be waiting for you at our Oglethorpe Street Adoption Center!    (Courtesy Humane Rescue Alliance)
Pet of the Week: Mister Cadberry  For the week of Jan. 9  Mister Cadberry is a rabbit with a great personality. Unfortunately, he has bounced around quite a bit in his short life. Originally brought to the shelter two years ago when his first owner didn’t want him anymore, he was quickly adopted.  However, he was returned because the adoptive family had another rabbit that did not want a second rabbit in the home. Most recently, Mister Cadberry lived with a very nice lady that let him hop freely around her apartment, but she was forced to move to a place that would not allow small animals.  In his most recent home, Mister Cadberry became very good friends with a parakeet and the owner believes that he would do best with a buddy in his new home, perhaps another rabbit or small animal. Mister Cadberry doesn’t enjoy being picked up and carried around, but he will hop onto your lap for cuddle time if you let him. He also loves scalp massages and is a big fan of rabbit toys and fun things to chew on. Think you’d like to adopt a small animal? Come visit Mister Cadberry at the Oglethorpe Street adoption facility. Mister Cadberry is in the “Hidden Gem” program, where he gets his very own volunteers  who spend extra time with him to work on basic training needs. Adoption fees for our Hidden Gems are waived. (Courtesy Humane Rescue Alliance)
Pet of the Week: Fabian  For the week of Jan. 2  UPDATE: Good news – Fabian was adopted on the afternoon of Jan. 3! A spokeswoman with the Human Rescue Alliance says a listener heard about the 10-year-old silky terrier on WTOP in the morning, and raced over to adopt him. A happy success story for the year’s first Pet of the Week. ——————- Previous description that had been shared about Fabian, before his adoption:  Fabian is a 10-year-old silky terrier with a whole lot of spunk! He came to the Humane Rescue Alliance through a transport from a shelter in New Orleans and is one of the most active and curious terriers around. Surprisingly at 10, he is very agile and loves to jump in laps and on sofas. Fabian is playful and intelligent, although toys don’t interest him much. He definitely wants to be the center of attention and should be the only animal in the home because, well, he just doesn’t like other animals very much. Stop by the HRA Oglethorpe Street campus and meet Fabian; he’ll  be there waiting for you. And don’t be surprised if he jumps right into your arms when you get here! (Courtesy Humane Rescue Alliance)

Pet of the week Tank

Take a look at our 2016 pets, and where they are now

The Humane Rescue Alliance (formerly the Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League) has protected and served the community for more than 145 years and serves more than 60,000 animals annually. The broad range of programs offered include: rescue and adoption, humane law enforcement, low-cost veterinary services, animal care and control, behavior and training, spay-neuter services, humane education, and many others.

The organization is dedicated to ensuring the safety and welfare of all animals, bringing people and animals together, and working with all communities to support these relationships.  HRA is based in Washington, DC, the only major urban area in the country that has all of its animal protection programs and services unified in one organization, making the Humane Rescue Alliance a model for the nation.
