Students angry local university made late snow call

WASHINGTON – Most schools gave students plenty of notice about canceling classes Thursday, including the University of Maryland, Johns Hopkins and Georgetown.

But one school left students scrambling until the last minute.

The University of Maryland Baltimore County didn’t cancel classes until 5:30 a.m.

Students were on social media Thursday complaining about the late decision and a petition is being circulated online.

In a statement to WTOP the school said:

“We pay careful attention to weather forecasts, road conditions and other issues. Because there are so many variables involved, we wait until as much information is available as possible about emerging weather conditions before making final decisions about closures. Like many Baltimore-area universities, we often make these decisions in the very early morning.”
