WASHINGTON - As a jury weighs murder charges against a Philadelphia doctor, an anti-abortion rights group rallied to draw attention to an abortion doctor here in the District.
This week, the Arlington, Va.-based Live Action released a hidden-camera video of a pregnant woman consulting with Dr. Cesare Santangelo. In the video, he says if a baby lives through a failed abortion, its survival depends on how "vigorously" it's taken care of.
The comments sparked the rally in front of Santangelo's office at the Washington Surgi-Clinic in Foggy Bottom Wednesday.
"We will not go away until Santangelo is investigated and prosecuted," said Lila Rose, the founder of Live Action.
Rose also said she was in talks with the management of the building and hoped the doctor would be evicted.
Rose accused Santangelo of being "willing to practice… infanticide."
Other speakers called for immediate action by law enforcement agencies and politicians.
Meanwhile, supporters of Live Action were met by volunteers from the Washington Area Clinic Defense Task Force.
Paul Valette said the task force normally escorts patients and their friends and family into buildings actively blocked by protesters. He said there were no conflicts in this case.
"This was intended, clearly… to be a rally and not an effort to stop patients from entering the building," according to Valette.
Valette said that although his group technically takes no stand on the issue of abortion, he found the video to be sensational and akin to entrapment.
