Northern Virginians donate 25,000 blankets to refugees

WASHINGTON — Some Syrian and Iraqi refugees will be a little bit warmer
this
winter thanks to a helping hand from people in Northern Virginia.

Some 25,000 blankets have been donated and $100,000 raised to assist refugees
in
Turkey who have fled violence in Syria and Iraq.

The blankets were dropped off last month at 30 collections sites throughout
Northern Virginia.

Paxton Cos. is carrying the blankets to Norfolk, Virginia where they’ll be
loaded on
a Maersk freighter for delivery to Turkey. Both firms are donating their
services.

The Northern Virginia Regional Commission helped organize the blanket drive.
