NEW YORK (AP) — First came “De La Guarda.” Then came “Fuerza Bruta.” Now the third part in the Argentinian multi-sensory trilogy has its sights set on a familiar New York stage.
Producers said Wednesday that “Wayra” will start playing at the Daryl Roth Theatre — where the other two shows found a home — on June 27 and have an opening night July 8. One twist this time is that the new show will have live music for the first time.
“It gives the show another energy. You can feel it from the beginning” said Gaby Kerpel, the show’s musical director. The performers who spin and dance this time will sing and use Argentinian and Brazilian drums.
Kerpel described “Wayra” as a natural evolution from “Fuerza Bruta,” which mixed dance, acrobatics and aerial imagery. The new 80-minute show will have some new elements, new sets and about 10 performers. Tickets will be $99.
Audience members stand as the non-verbal action happens above and around them and some spectators are briefly integrated into the action. Acrobats perform in wading pools suspended in the air and the tribal music gives way to a techno dance party.
The series was developed by the Argentinian artistic director Diqui James and Kerpel and have toured the world. The Daryl Roth Theatre was home to “De La Guarda” from 1998-2004 and “Fuerza Bruta” from 2007 until earlier early this year. Both had recorded music.
“We love New York City and we think it’s a very good place to be,” said Kerpel . “It is almost like it’s our city now, since we’ve been coming here so long. It’s nice.”
