HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) -- A young Zimbabwean writer has become the first black African woman to be nominated among six finalists for the coveted British literary Booker Prize for her novel touching on many of the woes of her troubled homeland.

NoViolet Bulawayo's "We Need New Names" is on the recently announced shortlist of the finest English-language writing from Britain and its Commonwealth of former colonial territories.

Bulawayo, 31, writes on the difficult search for identity in the United States by Africans escaping poverty and upheaval at home and leaving childhood friends and the "colors and magic" of their continent.

The Man Booker Prize, funded by The Man Group investing firm, ranks beside Nobel and Pulitzer literary honors in prestige.

The winner will be announced Oct. 15.
