CULPEPER, Va. (AP) -- The "crown jewel" of Culpeper is back.

The State Theatre's refurbished marquee was lifted into place Tuesday. Electricians will spend the next few days wiring up the marquee in anticipation of the theatre's Grand Illumination celebration to be held Dec. 19.

The "State" sign is being attached to the front of the Culpeper landmark as part of a $9 million renovation project to return the theatre to its 1970s heyday.

The State Theatre closed in 1993. Culpeper entrepreneur Greg Yates bought the run-down theatre building in 2003 and deeded it to a foundation, which raised money to restore it.

The Free Lance-Star reports ( the theater will show vintage films, hold stage productions and host music shows.

A 10-day grand opening is set to begin May 4.
