Nordstrom Rack to land at Springfield Town Center

Sometimes (in this business, actually, often times), rumors do come true.

We hinted at it last month, and now comes confirmation Nordstrom Rack has signed a lease for a junior anchor space at Springfield Town Center — aka, the former Springfield Mall. Nordstrom announced the deal Wednesday in a press release.

The 33,000-square-foot store is scheduled to open in spring 2015, roughly six months after the Springfield Town Center opens for business Oct. 17. It will join H&M, Dick's Sporting Goods, Forever 21, J Crew, Topshop Topman, Maggiano's, Yard House, Regal Cinemas and roughly 70 other stores and restaurants we've cataloged over the last year.

It will be the sixth Nordstrom Rack in Virginia — Pentagon Centre, Tysons, downtown D.C. and Friendship Heights, among them — in addition to the state's five existing Nordstrom stores. The Rack offers "on-trend apparel," accessories and shoes at 30-70 percent off regular prices.

"We believe Springfield Town Center represents the best of shopping and entertainment in the area and are thrilled to be a part of the retail mix," Geevy Thomas, Nordstrom Rack president, said in the release.

The former Springfield Mall is undergoing a $250 million renovation led by owner Vornado Realty Trust. The Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust has agreed to acquire the town center after its opening for $465 million. Then the question becomes, what does PREIT do with it?

"We look forward to offering customers a differentiated retail experience this fall with the grand re-opening of Springfield Town Center as well as the introduction of more exciting tenants to serve our shoppers," Joseph Coradino, PREIT's CEO, said in the release.
