Crumbs cupcake shops could reopen in the D.C. region

Good news for Crumbs fans: Some of the cupcake company’s D.C.-area stores could reopen after a federal bankruptcy judge on Wednesday approved the sale of the company to a new owner.

Fischer Enterprises, the company that turned around ice-cream-of-the-future purveyor Dippin’ Dots, will purchase Crumbs Bake Shop, according to The Wall Street Journal. Crumbs closed all of its 48 locations in July as it considered filing for bankruptcy protection.

Almost half of of those locations will remain shuttered, but the new ownership plans to focus on reopening the rest of the stores, including some locally. Before the closings, the region had five Crumbs shops: three in D.C., one in Clarendon and one in Tysons Corner.

We’ve reached out to Crumbs for more information on which stores could reopen and when, and we will update this when we learn more. Most of the permanent closures are in shopping mall locations, the WSJ reported, so if anything, the Tysons Corner location could be on the chopping block.
