LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Los Angeles city planning commission has approved a beer and wine permit for a restaurant at a Skid Row apartment complex that houses recovering alcoholics and drug addicts.
The Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/1s8AJ7g) reported Wednesday that the four members of the central area planning commission voted unanimously to overturn a zoning administrator’s March ruling denying the permit.
Associate Zoning Administrator Maya Zaitzevsky had ruled that the permit “would be detrimental to the welfare” of some residents of the New Genesis Apartments.
The Skid Row Housing Trust, which runs the 106-unit facility, argued the permit was crucial to the financial health of the complex in the gentrifying area.
Opponents will take their challenge to the Alcoholic Beverage Control board, which still must decide on a liquor license for the restaurant.
