GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Ariz. (AP) — An Arizona woman injured when she fell off a trail in the Grand Canyon was rescued after being stranded for about eight hours on a slope above an 80-foot cliff.
The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office says the hiker fell Sunday, landing within several feet of the cliff’s edge.
The Tucson woman would start to slide farther down the slope when she tried to move, so she remained still as fellow hikers used a satellite emergency notification device to summon help.
It took responders several hours to hike to the site and then several more to extract the woman. A helicopter was used to lift her out of the canyon.
The woman was released from the Grand Canyon Clinic after treatment for a fractured ankle and hypothermia. Her name was not released.
