Civil War battlefields preserved in Virginia

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia is celebrating the transfer of more than 125 acres of land from the Civil War Trust.

Gov. Terry McAuliffe this week accepted the transfer of land at Sailor’s Creek Battlefield Historical State Park and High Bridge Trail State Park in Amelia and Prince Edward counties.

McAuliffe says efforts to preserve battlefields and other historic treasures in the state create a lasting legacy for present and future Virginians.

Officials say Virginia has worked with the Civil War Trust since 1996 to protect hallowed ground at Sailor’s Creek Battlefield. The effort has helped protect 885 acres at Sailor’s Creek Historic Battlefield and 175 acres at High Bridge Trail.

On Saturday, the National Park Service and the Richmond Battlefields Association also commemorated the transfer of 18 acres at the Cold Harbor battlefield.
