Stocks rise…Oil falls…Judge puts hold on sports betting in NJ

NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street is in the midst of one of the busiest times of the year, when companies report their quarterly results. And yesterday, the stock market closed out its best week in nearly two years on a positive note, helped by strong earnings from some big U.S. companies. The Dow rose more than 127 points. The S&P 500 gained nearly 14 and the Nasdaq rose 31 points.

NEW YORK (AP) — Evidence of ample supplies and weak demand are pushing down the price of oil. Benchmark U.S. crude fell $1.08 to close at $81.01 a barrel in New York yesterday. Brent crude, a benchmark for international oils used by many U.S. refineries, fell 70 cents to close at $86.13 in London.

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — A federal judge has granted a request from the four major professional sports leagues and the NCAA to at least temporarily stop New Jersey from allowing legalized sports betting. The judge issued a temporary restraining order Friday. The leagues told the judge they will be irreparably harmed if the state’s casinos and racetracks were permitted to allow sports betting.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Uber is facing a battle with the Nevada’s highly regulated taxi industry. The ride-sharing company launched in Las Vegas, Reno and Carson City on Friday but some cars driven for Uber have been impounded statewide for not being licensed. Uber calls the impoundments “unjust.” It says it’s not a taxi company but a technological platform for connecting riders with drivers.

ROME (AP) — Hundreds of thousands of people marched in Rome today to protest against Premier Matteo Renzi’s drive to make it easier to fire workers. Two noisy marches crisscrossed the heart of the Italian capital, snarling traffic for hours. The center-left premier contends businesses fear hiring workers they cannot dismiss in case business sours, because current legislation makes it very hard to lay off employees.
