Kitchensurfing.com launches in D.C.; in-home chefs a click away

You can cook for your dinner guests, serve them and then clean up the kitchen after they go home, or you can have a professional chef come to your house and do it all.

New York-based Kitchensurfing.com has launched in Washington, connecting private chefs in the area with people who want their services at home.

The service starts at around $50 per person for parties of six to 12, though Kitchensurfing allows bookings outside of set budgets and party sizes with a “special requests” function.

As of launch, Kitchensurfing says it is working with more than 20 chefs in the Washington market.

Kitchensurfing, which has raised more than $18.7 million in total funding since launching in 2012, says chefs are fully screened, with background checks and taste-tests by Kitchensurfing staff before joining the site.

Chefs can apply to be part of the service at its website.

“We believe that everyone should be able to experience the luxury of a personal chef. Our unique dining experience brings people together through their love of food, from a cozy family dinner to a six-course dinner party or anything in between,” Kitchensurfing’s mission statement says.

A quick browse through its website finds vegan, gluten-free and kosher options, and two dozen cuisine themes, from African and Caribbean to Soul and Southeast Asian.

In addition to Washington and New York, Kitchensurfing is now available in Boston, Chicago, the Hamptons, Los Angeles and Seattle, with one international market in Berlin.
