Owners of dogs in fatal attack to stand trial

LAPEER, Mich. (AP) — A judge has ordered a Michigan couple to stand trial on murder and other charges in the fatal mauling of a jogger by two of their dogs.

The Detroit News reports Friday (http://bit.ly/1m1a4a2 ) that Lapeer District Judge Laura Barnard called the attack on 46-year-old Craig Sytsma a “terrible, terrible event.”

Sebastiano Quagliata and his wife, Valbona Lucaj, were ordered to remain jailed on $500,000 bonds. Their arraignments are scheduled Sept. 22 on second-degree murder and other charges.

Sytsma was attacked by two cane corsos on July 23 in Metamora Township, about 45 miles northwest of Detroit.

Both cane corsos and another dog from the property were later euthanized.

Lucaj’s attorney Ryan Streefkerk told reporters Friday that he and his client were “very surprised” the case was bound over for trial.
