PORT ANGELES, Wash. (AP) — Olympic National Park says a house mover is using equipment and possibly animals to push a historic lodge away from the eroding edge of a river in a remote wilderness area.
Spokeswoman Rainey McKenna said good weather Thursday should allow a helicopter to bring in any equipment that couldn’t be carried by the mules and horses. The jacks will slide the structure along steel beams, McKenna said.
She said the animals might be used to drag the Enchanted Valley Chalet 50 to 100 feet to prevent it from falling into the east fork of the Quinault River.
The house mover has until Sept. 24 to complete the work.
The chalet is 13 miles from the nearest road in Olympic National Park in northwestern Washington state.
The 42-foot-by-28-foot structure was built as a backcountry lodge in the 1930s. It has been used as a wilderness ranger station and emergency shelter.
