Florida woman charged after dog dies in hot car

CRESTVIEW, Fla. (AP) — A Florida woman faces animal cruelty charges following the death of a dog that authorities say was left in her car for more than 13 hours.

Crestview police detectives say the woman appeared to have mental health issues and told them a head injury causes her to forget things. The woman said she forgot that she left the bulldog mix in her SUV overnight while she wandered a Walmart Supercenter in Florida’s Panhandle last month.

The car was left running with the air conditioner on, but officers said air had stop circulating before the dog died. An officer had checked on the dog earlier that morning and determined the dog was fine in the air conditioned car. Passers-by called police several hours later after the dog died in the hot car.
