Ted Leonsis to receive charitable award

WASHINGTON — You might know him as a big time sports team owner, but an award to be bestowed later this month shows a different side of Ted Leonsis, who’s part of the group that owns the Capitals and the Wizards.

“This year Ted Leonsis will receive the TAPS Engaged Philanthropist Award,” says Ami Neiberger-Miller who’s with the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, a nonprofit organization that assists the families of fallen members of the military.

Leonsis will be recognized by TAPS during its 20th Anniversary Honor Guard Gala on Thursday, March 27.

He says he’s humbled to be recognized by the organization that means so much to him and that gives comfort and care to those who have given so much to all of us.

Since 1994, TAPS has helped more than 44,000 surviving family members and their caregivers, all free of charge.

Over the last two seasons, the Washington Capitals’ Courage Caps campaign has sold Capitals team hats emblazoned with the word “Courage” and donated 100 percent of the purchase price to TAPS.

It has raised more than $200,000.
