Get the most out of your spring vacation

WASHINGTON — Spring break is just around the corner and you’re tired of the cold. You want to go somewhere warm, but you do not want your vacation to be too expensive.

Peter Greenberg, CBS News travel editor, has some ideas that could benefit your family and also your wallet.

He recommends cruises.

“It is really a buyer’s market right now. You are seeing some fares as low as $179 for a five-day cruise. You cannot beat that. You can’t wake up in Washington, D.C., for $179.”

If you are trying to avoid the college students and spring break shenanigans, he advises that you visit a national park. Greenberg recommends Acadia National Park in Maine.

Another way to save money is to ride trains instead of planes. Greenberg says Amtrak offers a 15-day pass for $500. In comparison, airfares are up 14 percent since last year.

Not a bad deal at all, he says.
