WASHINGTON - "Barks and Brews" was in full swing Thursday night as pet lovers and dogs socialized and threw back some beers.

On Thursday night, Penn Quarter's Central Liquors held the event for the second time to raise funds for the Washington Animal Rescue League.

Narragansett Brewery was the beer sponsor at the dog-friendly tasting event. Locally-operated SniffingButt Dog Bone Brewery provided alcohol-free, pet-safe dog treats made from spent craft brewery grains.

"We always like dog friendly places and we support them, so we'll definitely be regular customers here," said Indra, who brought Hoover, her 60 pound standard poodle. She said she read about the "Yappie Hour" online.

Janet, who brought her pooch Monie, said her excuse was, "just to meet people and see other dogs," and, much to Monie's chagrin, "put a costume on her."

Not only did donations at the event benefit the Washington Animal Rescue League, but four of the adoptable dogs came along, sporting vests that said, "adopt me." WARL spokesperson Matt Williams said one benefit of adopting a dog is that new owners automatically get enrolled in a type of puppy kindergarten.

"it's usually more about training the owners than it is about training the dogs," said Williams.
