WASHINGTON – Father’s Day — Sunday, June 16 — is right around the corner.

And if you are at a loss for gift ideas or plans with dad, WTOP has a few locally- based suggestions.

Take dad to a brewery.

Let’s face it: Craft beer is best enjoyed where it’s made. Thankfully, the D.C. area has lots of breweries to tour and taste.

Check out DC Brau, Capitol City Brewing Company, Port City Brewing, Dogfish Head Alehouse and Restaurant, Three Stars Brewing Company and Mad Fox Brewing Company, just to name a few.

Golf next to the monuments.

East Potomac Golf Course, located along the Potomac River in Southwest D.C., has one of the best views of the monuments for one of the best prices. Even if you can’t impress dad with your handicap, you can impress him with the scenery.

Taste the best the area has to offer at Taste of Reston.

Give dad the gift of some of the area’s best cuisine at Taste of Reston. The two day festival runs June 15-15 and features food from 19 local vendors. Wine and craft beers will also be on hand. Have little ones? The event includes a carnival component with rides and games.

Organize a fishing trip along the Chesapeake.

Sometimes there is nothing better than fresh air, salt water and a fishing line. Plenty of companies organize fishing tours and trips along the Chesapeake. Check-out Chesapeake Bay Sport Fishing and Down Time Charters to start.

Watch a free outdoor movie.

Just because you’re strapped on cash doesn’t mean you can’t have fun on Father’s Day. There are several outdoor summer movies series in the area.

On Father’s Day weekend, “Can’t Buy Me Love” is showing June 14 at the Rosslyn Outdoor Film Festival, “Iron Man” is showing June 13 at Canal Park, “The King’s Speech” screens June 17 at the Crystal City Screen Movie Festival and “Madagascar 3” shows June 16 at National Harbor.

Pack a blanket, a picnic and give dad the gift of outdoor entertainment.

Soak-up some culture at D.C.’s Jazz Festival.

Does dad enjoy music? The DC Jazz Festival runs June 5-16, so you’re just in time. Six performances are scheduled for Sunday, June 16 at various locations throughout the area. Check out the website for the festival’s full schedule, as well as ticket information.

Raise a glass at the Northern Virginia Summer Brewfest.

If dad can wait a week for his Father’s Day celebration, get him a ticket to the Northern Virginia Summer Brewfest in Leesburg, June 22 and 23. The craft beer festival features beers from different microbreweries around the U.S. Food vendors and food trucks will also be on site. Cheers!
