Adopt-a-thon offers deals

WASHINGTON - WTOP Living is partnering with the Washington Animal Rescue League to feature a Pet of the Week available for adoption. Meet this week's pet below.
WARL couldn't be limited to just one pet this week because there are so many just waiting to be adopted this weekend (June 1- 2) at the Washington Animal Rescue League's first 2013 ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge "Adopt-a-thon!"
Instead of featuring one pet, we asked WARL staffers to show off just a few of the more than 150 canines and felines of all ages that will be available for adoption at reduced fees between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. both days.
As an added incentive, adopters can spin a prize wheel to win pet-friendly prizes or additional reductions -- up to 50 percent -- in adoption fees.
Running June 1 through August 31, the $100K Challenge is a nationwide competition for animal shelters (and their communities) aimed at getting more animals adopted or returned to their owners than ever before.
Shelter participants are competing for a chance at more than $600,000 in grant funding, including a grand prize of $100,000. WARL's goal is to place a record 800 animals during this period.
WARL will hold special on- and off-site adoption events -- including two more Adopt-a-thons -- throughout the summer. Check the website regularly for details.
