RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Visitors to Richmond have a new trail that connects many of the city's historic sites, attractions and neighborhoods.

Gov. Bob McDonnell says volunteers this weekend marked the Richmond Liberty Trail that includes 15 national historic landmarks and connects with the Richmond Slave Trail.

Those who follow the 6.2-mile trail will see sites like the Virginia State Capitol, the American Civil War Center and St. John's Church.

The trail also highlights the memorial at what was the main port of entry for those being sold as slaves from 1680 to 1780.

Officials say the trail was inspired by the Boston Freedom Trail project and is a collaborative effort among Richmond's business, tourism and history communities.

Additionally, Richmond Slave Trail officials announced that permanent, bronze medallions will be installed along its route.
