WASHINGTON (AP) -- A New York artist has won a national portraiture competition and will be commissioned to create an original piece for the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery.

The museum announced Friday night that Bo Gehring of Beacon, N.Y., won first prize in the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition. He wins a $25,000 cash reward and a separate commission to portray a living American for the gallery's permanent collection.

Gehring won for a portrait entitled "Jessica Wickham."

The competition drew more than 3,000 entries. The works of 48 finalists were chosen for display in an exhibition at the museum.

Second prize was awarded to Jennifer Levonian of Philadelphia for a digital video animation entitled "Buffalo Milk Yogurt," and third prize was awarded to Sequoyah Aono of New York City, who created a self-portrait sculpture.
