WINTERGREEN, Va. (AP) -- Wintergreen Resort in Nelson County is opening ahead of schedule thanks to this weekend's colder weather.
The first skiers hit the slopes Monday after the resort was able to fire up its snow guns and pack enough powder to open early. Officials had planned to open on Wednesday.
WVIR-TV reports (http://bit.ly/V7sjHT ) that the resort credits its new snowmaking system for making the Christmas Eve opening possible.
Wintergreen officials hope the cold temperatures continue to allow more trails to open by the weekend.
Milder weather delayed Wintergreen's target opening date of Dec. 8. The resort had started making snow two or three times and had to stop because temperatures warmed back up.
