OXON HILL, Md. (AP) -- Elmo, Cookie Monster and Grover from "Sesame Street" have a new home near Washington as the National Children's Museum opens at National Harbor in suburban Maryland, featuring characters from the show.

The museum opens Friday after years of planning. The former Capitol Children's Museum closed on Capitol Hill in 2004. At the time, Congress called for it to become a national museum with a wider reach.

Fundraising fell short for the project, though. It has been significantly scaled back from original plans. Museum officials refocused on opening the museum's first phase with what they could afford.

It includes a theater and exhibits on citizenship and world cultures. "Sesame Street" is the star attraction in the 3-and-under gallery where Cookie Monster has a food truck for children to play in.
