WASHINGTON - District of Columbia government offices and schools will be closed Tuesday, and the D.C. Council has canceled its scheduled legislative meeting.
Mayor Vincent Gray says shutting down the government is in the best interest of public safety as Hurricane Sandy pounds the nation's capital.
The council had been expected to take up numerous bills, including one that would bring the penalties for reckless driving in line with those in other jurisdictions. The meeting was rescheduled for Thursday morning.
