Dominion says Sandy could leave 1M in the dark

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Dominion Virginia Power estimates up to 1 million customers could lose power over the next few days as Hurricane Sandy barrels by Virginia.

About 9,500 of the utility's Virginia customers were without power Monday afternoon. Most of those are in northern and southeastern Virginia, as well as the Northern Neck area.

The company with about 2.3 million Virginia customers says the three-day window of the storm will make it difficult for crews to restore power until the winds have passed.

Appalachian Power expects outages in the western part of the state over the next 24 hours. Only about 830 of its 500,000 Virginia customers were without power Monday afternoon and Virginia's electric cooperatives reported about 2,360 customers without power.

Additional crews are being brought in to assist with restoration efforts.
