Census: turkeys raised in Va. up to 16 million

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia agricultural officials say the number of turkeys raised in the state is expected to total 16 million this year.

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services said Friday that’s up 3 percent from 2013. The turkey census is based on a survey conducted in the nation’s major turkey-producing states by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Virginia ranks fifth in the nation in terms of the number of turkeys raised within its borders. They represent Virginia’s fourth largest agricultural commodity.
