Foust, Comstock square off in congressional debate

LEESBURG, Va. (AP) — Republican Barbara Comstock sought to portray herself as the natural successor to popular, retiring incumbent Frank Wolf in a congressional debate against Democrat John Foust.

Foust, meanwhile, sought to portray Comstock as a hyper-partisan Beltway warrior who will perpetuate congressional gridlock.

Comstock and Foust are running to succeed Wolf, a Republican, in Virginia’s 10th congressional district, which stretches through parts of northern Virginia.

At Wednesday’s debate in Leesburg, sponsored by the Loudoun County Chamber of Commerce, Comstock invoked Wolf’s name at least 13 times, reminding the crowd that she was once a Wolf staffer.

Foust highlighted his work with the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors to maintain a balanced budget through a recession.

The campaign has been one of the most closely watched House races in the nation.
